STARS, STRIPES & SERVICE: Celebrating 250 Years of American Freedom | This July, our nation marks 250 years since its founding – a milestone measured not in monuments, but in the lives of those who defended it. Every artifact, photograph, letter, and firsthand account in our collection carries a piece of that 250-year story, educating and inspiring generations who never lived it firsthand. At the Veterans Museum, we are honored to serve as caretakers of these legacies, ensuring that as America turns 250, the voices who shaped that history are never lost to it. Freedom isn’t an idea we inherited – it’s a debt we owe to those who served, and we are proud to help our nation remember that.
On June 18, 2026, Major James Capers Jr., U.S. Marine Corps (Retired), was awarded the Medal of Honor at a White House ceremony for his extraordinary heroism during the Vietnam War in 1967. Earlier this year, the Veterans Museum had the privilege of visiting Major Capers at his home in Jacksonville, North Carolina, to record his story for the Library of Congress Veterans History Project.
